The entire share capital of Edif is acquired by RINA, a multinational testing, inspection, certification and consulting engineering group based in Genoa, Italy. For Edif, being part of the RINA Group will strenthen the company's access to new markets through cooperation with RINA's offices around the world.

ERA formally changes its name from The Electrical Research Association Ltd to ERA Technology Ltd. ERA continues to develop, with new research areas including radiofrequency technology and electronic systems and a wider range of engineering consultancy services for mechanical as well as electronic and electrical systems.

ERA begins re-organising its mode of operation to reflect the rapidly changing technology base within the industries it serves. This enables the company to derive income from single client and multi-client projects (previously, ERA had derived much of its income from member company subscriptions and UK government grants). Thus, ERA becomes the first ‘privatised’ research association.

Major new laboratories and offices open in Leatherhead, Surrey. They have remained Edif ERA’s headquarters ever since. Development on the 15-acre campus site has continued to the present day with the addition of several purpose-built facilities.

ERA gives direct assistance to the war effort, including working on the development of radar and mine detection equipment.

ERA, now Edif ERA, is founded. It is incorporated under the name The British Electrical and Allied Industries Research Association, but is known as The Electrical Research Association (ERA). Prior to ERA, there had not been any facility solely dedicated to cooperative electrical research in the UK.
